Bertie Hammond

Bertie L. Hammond, 85, of Litchfield, IL passed away June 3, 2020 at 6:10 A.M. at St. Johns Hospital in Springfield, IL.

She was born on May 20, 1935 in Blackwater, Virginia in a cabin in the woods, a daughter of Evan Dudley Wallen & Betty Willis, and step-mother who raised her, Euna Wallen

She attended primary school in in Virginia and received an 8th grade education before leaving and working on the family farm. Several years later, she went back to obtain her GED at the age of 65. Bertie retired from Roller Derby where she spent 20+ years working on the factory line, cutting the material used for the top of the skate.

She was a member of the Litchfield Southern Baptist Church in Litchfield.

On August 26, 1953 she married John Edward “Ed” Hammond in the backwoods in Union County, SC.

Bertie enjoyed golfing, being outdoors and birdwatching. She especially liked traveling and taking road trips to Minnesota to go fishing and South Carolina to visit her family and go to the beach. More than anything, she enjoyed her family and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her children:

Mary Ellen (Lisa Olson) Hammond of Dixon, IL

David Hammond of Springfield, IL

Danial Hammond of Litchfield, IL

Grandchildren, Jamie (Sam) Brandon, Nathan & Jonathan Hammond, Nick and Mali McNice

And 10 great-grandchildren

Sister, Leo Bumgardner of Whitmire, SC

Brother, E.B. Wallen of Whitmire, SC

She was preceded in death by her parents, stepmother, and husband, and grandson, Patrick McNice.

Private family graveside services will be held Friday, June 5, 2020 at 10:00 A.M. at the Elm Lawn Cemetery in Litchfield, IL. Pastor Rudy Elam will officiate. The family suggests any memorial contributions be directed to the Litchfield Southern Baptist Church in Litchfield, IL.

The Litchfield Family Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.
