Charles Edward Hughes, 83 of Litchfield died on April 10, 2014 at 7 p.m. at St. Francis Hospital in Litchfield of respiratory disease. Mr. Hughes was born on December 19, 1930 in Irving, IL son of Edward and Ada Orberle Hughes. He was the eldest son of 6 children raised on the family farm in Honey Point Township. He married Arlene Schmidt of Gillespie, IL on June 6, 1954 at Zion Lutheran Church in Gillespie, IL.
He served in the US Army during the Korean War. He is a Lifetime Member of VFW Post 3912 in Litchfield, IL. He was also a member of American Legion Post 436 in Litchfield, IL. As an avid bingo caller and volunteer, he was a well know fixture at his beloved hall. He was the first recipient of the local American Legion Volunteer of the year award. He was also awarded the Volunteer of Year award by the Montgomery County Fair Board.
Charles worked on the family farm, at the Wepco factory in Litchfield, IL several self-employed farm service companies, Redfern Farm Supply, and finished his career working for the City of Litchfield Lake Department. He was a life-long resident of Litchfield, IL. He enjoyed watching his grandchildren play local sports, NASCAR racing, fishing, playing pinochle, and anything farm related, and the St. Louis Cardinals. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Litchfield, IL. He enjoyed the local coffee shop swapping stores with his friends. He was very proud of his family, and rarely missed a chance to watch his grandchildren preform.
He is survived by Arlene Schmidt Hughes of Litchfield, sons, Dr. Loren Hughes and wife Anne of Glen Carbon, Allen Hughes and wife Tami of Litchfield, and daughter, Charlene Giannuzzi of Litchfield. Grandchildren, Erin Robbins of Troy, Jasmine Giannuzzi of Edwardsville, Luke Hughes of Glen Carbon, Rocky Giannuzzi of Litchfield, Kaitlyn Hughes of Litchfield, and Nathan Hughes of Litchfield. He is also survived by his brother Dale Hughes and wife Rosemary of Litchfield, and his sister Sylvia Tester of Glendale, AZ. Brother-in-law- Art Stoecker of Carlinville, and sister-in-law Lucy Hughes of Litchfield. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Rosetta Price, Edna Stoecker, and brother James Hughes.
The body will be cremated per his wishes. Visitation will be held at Zion Lutheran Church on Sunday April 13, 2014 at 2 p.m. Funeral service at 3 p.m. with burial immediately following at Elm Lawn Cemetery, Litchfield, IL. Honorary pallbearers are David Ziegler, Tyler Robbins, Bob Schneitzs, Luke Hughes, Rocky Giannuzzi, and Nathan Hughes. Memorials may be given to the Litchfield Veterans’s Memorial Garden Fund.
