Melvin L. Davis, 80 of Litchfield, Il passed away Wednesday morning, July 10, 2024, at Staunton Memorial Hospital in Staunton, IL.
Melvin was born October 5, 1943, in Divernon, IL, a son of Walter and Opal Bandy Davis.
Melvin graduated from Litchfield High School with the class of 1961.
He married Merry Vath June 18, 1966, at the Litchfield Assembly of God Church and shared 58 years together.
Mel began his career as a Lithographer/Pressman with the State of Illinois. He continued with the Litchfield News Herald for 18 years. Then worked for The Edwardsville Intelligencer where he retired from the Hearst Corporation in 2010. In 1998 and again in 2005 the Hearst Corporation provided trips to New York City for Mel and Merry to accept his awards for his outstanding skills in the pressroom and for saving the Corporation several hundred thousands of dollars.
As a young boy, Mel taught himself to play the guitar. He loved country music and playing his guitar. For many years, he played in bands in the area. Mel passed his love of music onto his 3 sons.
He enjoyed playing music with them and when his wife would sing. He and Merry loved to travel around to festivals, the state fair, site seeing and shopping.
Mel shared his love of astronomy with family and especially, his grandchildren. He enjoyed playing games, cards, and drinking coffee with family; laughing and carrying on late into the night.
Melvin was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Blanche Denby, brother John Ray Davis, sister, Maxine Duff, brothers, Larry and Don Davis and sister, Phyllis Trunk.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, July 14, 2024, 2:00 to 4:00 pm at Litchfield Family Funeral Service,700 South Street, Litchfield, IL.
Funeral Services will be conducted at 10:00 am, Monday, July 15, 2024 at Litchfield Family Funeral Service.
Burial will follow in Elm Lawn Cemetery, Litchfield, IL.
Melvin is survived by his wife, Merry, sons, Todd A. (Debra) Davis of Litchfield, IL, Brian L. (Kayla) Davis of Litchfield, IL and Mark S. (Heather) Davis of Staunton, IL, eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, sister, Dorothy (Bill) Sharp of Litchfield, IL, several nieces and nephews.
